St Mary's church, the name of which
appeared in written record as early as 1269, stood in
the very centre of the market square. It had been destroyed
by fire and reconstructed several times (in late Gothic
style in the fifteenth century) before, due to its poor
condition and a lack of space, the final decision to
pull it down was taken. The old town hall shared its
fate after the new one had been built in 1906.
